"It was a strike against me that I didn't where baggy jeans and jerseys and I never hustled, never sold drugs." Kanye's quote about the strikes against him are a reflection of how American view rappers. Rappers must have street creditability in order to be respected. If you've never lived the "Thug life" then as a rapper, you can't relate to the audience. Although Kanye has broken free from this stigma, I still think its one of many tragedies of Hip-Hop. Hip-Hop can be used as a forum to express the injustice people in this country face; and the issues that affect communities. However when a rapper chooses to express their truth, it is seen as weakness. This leaves artists wedged in this stereotype that all that matters are materialistic values and superficial views of life. - Antolina Garcia
